Specialist Pessary Fitting in Liverpool:
Non-Surgical Support for Pelvic Organ Prolapse
If you are living with the uncomfortable symptoms of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) - such as a heavy dragging sensation, a visible bulge, or bladder and bowel leakage - you are not alone.
Pelvic organs prolapse is an incredibly common condition affecting up to 40% of women.
As specialist Pelvic Health Physiotherapists based in Liverpool, we offer professional pessary fitting services designed to give you your quality of life back without immediately relying on surgical intervention.
What is a Vaginal Pessary and How Does It Help?
A vaginal pessary is a small, flexible silicone device inserted into the vagina. It acts like a supportive internal bra, lifting and holding the prolapsed pelvic organs (the bladder, uterus, or bowel) back into their correct anatomical positions.
Why pessaries are excellent for prolapse symptom relief
Choosing a supportive device like a pessary offers immediate, life-changing benefits, allowing you to stay active while managing your pelvic health:
Immediate symptom relief: By supporting the prolapsed tissue, a pessary can instantly alleviates the structural pressure, dragging sensations, and vaginal bulging.
A surgery-preventative alternative: For many women, a pessary can successfully delay or entirely eliminate the need for pelvic organ surgery. It is a highly effective, low-risk conservative option.
Restores impact and activity: Whether you want to return to running, heavy lifting, or simply enjoy a walk along the Liverpool waterfront without worry, a pessary keeps your pelvic organs supported during movement.
Improves bladder and bowel control: Prolapse often alters the angle of the urethra or rectum, leading to stress incontinence or incomplete emptying. A correctly fitted device helps improve these pathways
Your Journey: What to Expect From Initial Fitting to Long-Term Care
Your safety, comfort, and long-term tissue health are our priorities. Our clinical pathway follows national best-practice guidelines to ensure your care is seamless and safe.
-

The Initial Assessment & Fitting
We begin with a detailed clinical discussion of your medical history and symptoms, followed by an internal pelvic health examination. This examination is essential to assess the type and stage of your prolapse, evaluate your pelvic floor muscle strength, and measure your vaginal walls to ensure we select the exact shape and size of pessary required.
No two bodies are identical. We trial high-quality, medical-grade silicone pessaries to find the perfect individual fit. A proper fit means you should not be able to feel the device at all once it is in place.
-

The 4-Week Best Practice Follow-Up
Once your pessary is fitted, our care doesn't stop there. In line with UK clinical best-practice guidelines, we will ask to see you for a follow-up appointment in approximately 4 weeks.
This short-term review is vital to ensure:
• The device has remained securely in place during your normal daily activities.
• You are not experiencing any hidden discomfort or changes to your bladder and bowel habits.
• Your vaginal walls are adapting beautifully to the support.
-

Routine 6-Month Tissue Checks
Even if you become completely independent at managing your device, regular monitoring is essential for your internal health. We require all of our pessary patients to book in every 6 months for a routine tissue check.
During this routine review, we will carefully inspect the health of your vaginal walls to ensure there are no signs of pressure sores, minor grazing, or ulceration. To do this thoroughly, we may use a speculum to clearly examine your vaginal canal and cervix (if present).
Comprehensive Self-Management Training
We are passionate about empowering women. Rather than keeping you reliant on frequent clinic visits, we teach women how to self-manage their pessaries safely at home. We will guide you step-by-step through how to insert, remove, wash, and care for your device independently, giving you complete autonomy over your body.
Backed by Clinical Evidence: Do Pessaries Really Work?
Yes, they do. Medical research consistently highlights that vaginal pessaries are an outstandingly successful choice for managing prolapse symptoms.
The Success Rates: Clinical studies show that between 60% and 80% of women are successfully fitted with a pessary on their first or second attempt and achieve immediate symptom relief (International Urogynecology Journal). Furthermore, up to 92% to 95% of women report total satisfaction and a significant reduction in their prolapse bulge within the first few months of use.
