Knee Replacement Physio in Liverpool
At The Physiotherapy Centre, our specialist Chartered Physiotherapists across Liverpool South and Liverpool North work with surgical patients every day. Whether you are scheduled for surgery at local hospitals like Broadgreen, Spire Liverpool, or Renacres, or you are already fresh out of theatre, having a clear roadmap helps remove anxiety and keeps your recovery on track.
The Goal of Post-Op Knee Replacement Physiotherapy
Undergoing total or partial knee replacement surgery (knee arthroplasty) is a major milestone toward living a pain-free, active life. However, the procedure itself is only half the battle - the speed, quality, and comfort of your recovery depend directly on structured post-operative physiotherapy.
A successful knee replacement relies on achieving three main objectives in sequence:
Managing swelling and pain in the initial tissue-healing phase.
Restoring range of motion (getting the knee straight and bending past 90 degrees).
Rebuilding quadriceps and glute strength to support normal walking, stair climbing, and daily activity.

Why choose private physiotherapy at The Physiotherapy Centre?
While hospital NHS physiotherapy provides essential early discharge support, outpatient appointments can sometimes be spaced far apart. Private, targeted rehab fills this gap by giving you hands-on, one-on-one time at crucial stages of recovery.
Hands-on Manual Therapy: Gentle joint mobilizations and soft tissue release to break down scar tissue and alleviate surrounding muscle tension.
Tailored Progression: Exercises are adjusted dynamically based on your pain levels, swelling, and specific physical goals rather than a generic sheet of paper.
Pre-Hab Support: Seeing us before your operation (pre-operative rehab) builds muscle strength early, leading to significantly faster hospital discharge and easier early recovery.
Your week-by-week knee replacement recovery timeline
Every patient heals at their own pace, but a standard evidence-based rehabilitation timeline typically follows this path:
-

Weeks 1 – 2: Early Healing & Mobility
Primary Focus: Reducing post-surgical swelling, incision care, and activating the quadriceps muscle.
Movement Milestones: You will begin walking short distances using crutches or a frame. The main goal is reaching 0 degrees of knee extension (getting the knee completely flat) and improving knee flexion.
Key Exercises: Ankle pumps, static quad contractions (thigh squeezes), and gentle heel slide
-

Weeks 3 – 6: Rebuilding Movement & Weaning off Crutches
Primary Focus: Restoring functional range of motion and improving gait (walking pattern).
Movement Milestones: Aiming for 90 to 110 degrees of knee bend. Most patients begin transitioning from two crutches down to one stick, and eventually unassisted walking around the house.
Key Exercises: Seated knee flexion, straight leg raises, step-ups, and static exercise bike pedalling.
-

Weeks 7 – 12: Strength, Balance & Endurance
Primary Focus: Advanced quadriceps and hamstrings strengthening, balance training, and returning to outdoor walking and driving (once approved by your consultant).
Movement Milestones: Full or near-full knee range of motion (120+ degrees bend). Comfortable walking outdoors without aids, navigating stairs comfortably, and returning to low-impact recreational activities.
Key Exercises: Bodyweight squats, leg press variations, balance board exercises, and outdoor walking progression.
-

Month 3 Onward: Long-Term Function & Sport
Primary Focus: Returning to demanding hobbies like golf, gardening, swimming, or extended travel without stiffness or swelling.
